Org theorists have been talking about this for a bit, but really — like many things — the issue is more about the power of the words than the words themselves. Apps are still ‘software’ but we have evolved to call them by their names; smartphones are still ‘hardware’ but the same is true with them. Change is slow — organizational change is especially glacial — though eventually we’ll get there. What we can do, for now, is give more power to alternatives, rather than worrying so much about etymology and lexical heft. But all this is to say… it’s a great conversation to be having, and you’re always leading a thoughtful charge, J!
