It’s rarely, *rarely* a good idea to leave abruptly — save for aggressively toxic situations. Some might say, “burning bridges is okay, as long as you can build a boat.” But you *never* know what long-term relationships you’re building (or destroying) with a behavior like an immediate departure. A lateral colleague two departments over might be impressed or mortified by your behavior — and when they’re considering you for a gig 5–10 years later, they’ll remember. The kindest thing you can sometimes do for you (and “future you”) is to go quietly and gracefully — none the least because all of us are replaceable. Thanks for writing on this!
