In a former-life role (consulting), the firm expected that we take diligent (read: comprehensive and word-for-word) notes on what our clients were saying. The great thing was, we became historic scribes of everything. The bad thing was, in hearing everything the client was saying, we missed listening to the important stuff. Now when I take notes, it's after something has been said, and only in bullet-point form, and only if it was important enough to stick in my mind for a few moments.
