I get where you were going with all this. And it's a super relevant conversation to be having — especially right now. But one thing I've learned over many years in organizations is that "the dance" really does take two. I wouldn't say what you were doing was "toxic" — at least not compared to my very real toxic experiences — but they were unfortunate.

But you know what? The Billys of the world need to speak up, too, because sometimes bosses just don't get it. And yes, of course, I know there is a power dynamic... always if not often. But the response to such an exchange can be just as important as holding it in and letting it go nowhere.

I've had some version of that conversation with bosses plenty of times. Sometimes it's well-received ("Gosh, Evan, I had no idea...") and other times, not so much. But between what bosses say, and what they don't say, is a world of good learning.
