American Exception-alism
Oh, say, can you see?
That which separates us. I’ve been musing on that this morning — as I have been for nearly 60 months. John Winthrop opined, centuries back, that we should indeed be exceptional — a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us.
But being exceptional led us to be an exception of the wrong magnitude. America first has created a multiplicity of Americas. One where we reap the joys and benefits of science and progress and prosperity. And another, where, democracy be damned, freedom belies all else.
We seem to accept the exception-alism of our great hilled city, to the tune of sunken freedom for anyone because we claw at freedom for everyone.
Oh, say, can you see?
